River Cottage

Bird watching at the RSPB's reserve at Minsmere is also just a short drive away, as is the village of Orford and town of Framlingham with their respective ancient castles. Thorpeness, Aldeburgh and Woodbridge are within easy reach and just up the coast is Southwold, with its pier, as well as the beautiful villages of Walberswick and Dunwich. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, River Cottage provides the ideal location for a self-catering holiday from which to discover this beautiful part of the Suffolk coast.

From the River Cottage visitors' book...

"Beautiful accommodation in a most wonderful setting. The view from the cottage is outstanding and the walks along the river in both directions are very peaceful."
N and P

"River Cottage has been a little bit of heaven for us! A very comfortable place to stay in a superb setting. An excellent location for those interested in wildlife, with many birds on the river and Minsmere nearby."
J and N

"First time visit - sensational views and birds on your doorstep! Particularly enjoyed visits to Aldeburgh, Dunwich beach and Orford."
The F family

"We have really enjoyed our third stay in River Cottage. A great week blessed with lovely weather. Lots of highlights but we really enjoyed the changing landscape as the tides ebbed and flowed. Also Orford Ness, music at Snape Maltings, Shingle Street and, of course, canoeing to Snape."
The T family

"The view never disappoints. We've seen whimbrel, curlew, godwits, little egret and a spotted redshank! Lunch with a friend at the Maltings' concert hall café was excellent."
J and F

"Perfect cottage, perfect location. Would highly recommend. Great meal at the King's Head, Orford. Definitely walk to Snape Maltings and all the local beaches are lovely. Will definitely come again!"
The B family

"Our third stay at River Cottage and the view gets better and better! Last year it was the subject of a painting completed when we got home to remind us what a magical place this is! We were able to enjoy meals at the Butley Oysterage in Orford, the Anchor in Walberswick and, our favourite, the Lighthouse in Aldeburgh."
B and W

"Beautifully fitted and kept hideaway cottage. Amazing views and wildlife. We chased the sunrise on our last morning and nearly made it!"
N and L

"What a beautiful, tranquil place. We’ve had a glorious time, walking, spotting birds and spending time with friends."
The K and J families

River Cottage Directions:

The full address is River Cottage, Iken Cliff, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP12 2EN. If you wish to use What3words for navigation: https://w3w.co/bonfires.weekday.knots

Using the postcode for Sat Nav, when you are close, with the crossroads behind you, keep going straight along the road which has passing places if you meet another car. DO NOT turn down the first left hand turn (with a brown and white picnic site tourist sign). After about another 300 metres along a straight bit of road, you will see a sharp left-hand turn down a sandy track. There is a footpath sign which marks it. Drive slowly down there for about 70 metres, and the entrance to River Cottage is on the right.

Without using sat nav:

From the A12 northbound:

  • A12 Northbound past Ipswich and Woodbridge
  • Take the slip road off the A12 dual carriageway signed to Orford (B1078).
  • Turn right at the top of the slip road going over the A12 at Lower Hacheston.
  • Follow the B1078 through Campsea Ashe and Tunstall villages.
  • In Tunstall take a left turn at the T-junction after the garage, follow the road round a sharp right-hand bend before taking left-hand fork signed to Snape (B1069, Snape Road) after about 200 metres.
  • Continue for approx. 1 mile ignoring the first right-hand turn by the riding stables but taking the second right (a quarter of a mile further) signed to Iken.
  • Go through Tunstall Forest until you give way at a crossroads with a church sign opposite. Go straight across the crossroads and ignore the first turn on the left (picnic site).
  • 400 metres further on is a sandy track on the left. Take this and River Cottage is 70 metres down here on the right-hand side.

From the A14:

  • Leave the A14 at Junction 51 and take (briefly) the A140 signed to Norwich before almost immediately turning right across the dual carriageway onto the B1078.
  • Follow this road through Coddenham, Charsfield and Wickham Market before eventually crossing over the A12 at Lower Hacheston and then follow the same instructions as written for the A12 northbound (above).

From the A12 southbound:

  • Heading south on the A12, after the Saxmundham bypass, turn left on to the A1094 signed to Aldeburgh and Snape.
  • Two miles further, and 200 metres past Snape garage on your right, turn right at the staggered crossroads (Church on left) signed to Snape Village.
  • Go over Snape bridge leaving the Maltings on your left and fork immediately left towards Orford.
  • One mile further turn left at the crossroads signed to Iken and then follow the same instructions as written for the A12 northbound (above).
